Our Approach To Care For Children
‘The Hybrid Model’
Learning Disability and Autism Services
CSE (Child Sexual Explotation) and EBD (Emotional Behaviour Difficulties)
PACE in Our Hybrid Model:
- Playfulness: We infuse joy and lightness into our interactions, creating a welcoming and engaging atmosphere that encourages children to explore and learn.
- Acceptance: We provide unconditional acceptance, actively communicating to children that their feelings and thoughts are understood and respected.
- Curiosity: We show genuine interest in the children’s experiences, encouraging them to share and reflect on their own thoughts and feelings.
- Empathy: We strive to understand and share the feelings of each child, offering comfort and support in their individual experiences.
Integrating Evidence-Based Models:
- Person-Centered Care: Aligning with the principles of person-centered care, we tailor our approach to meet the unique needs, goals, values, and preferences of each child.
- Strengths-Based Approach: We focus on the strengths and abilities of each child, promoting resilience and self-esteem.
- Trauma-Informed Care: Recognising the impact of trauma, we create a safe space where children can heal and develop coping strategies.
- Cognitive-Behavioural Techniques: We use evidence-based cognitive-behavioural strategies to help children understand and manage their emotions and behaviours.
By blending PACE with these scientifically supported models, we create a comprehensive hybrid model of care that is dynamic, responsive, and deeply attuned to the needs of children with learning disabilities and autism. This approach not only addresses their developmental and emotional needs but also fosters a sense of safety, belonging, and well-being.
Adapting the PACE Model:
- Playfulness: We use gentle humour and light-hearted engagement to help children feel at ease, always being mindful of their boundaries and triggers
- Acceptance: We provide a non-judgmental space where children’s feelings and experiences are validated, fostering a sense of safety, and belonging
- Curiosity: We show a genuine interest in understanding their world without prying, encouraging open communication at their own pace
- Empathy: We offer deep, compassionate understanding, acknowledging their pain and supporting their journey towards healing
Incorporating Other Therapeutic Approaches:
- Trauma-Informed Care: We recognise the profound impact of trauma and structure our care to avoid re-traumatisation, focusing on empowerment and recovery.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): We utilise CBT to help children understand and manage their thoughts and emotions, building coping strategies for resilience.
- Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): DBT can be particularly effective for emotional regulation and improving interpersonal skills.
- Attachment-Based Therapy: We focus on building secure attachments, which are crucial for children who have experienced relational trauma.
Ensuring a Safe Environment:
- Safety Planning: We create individualised safety plans that address each child’s specific needs and concerns.
- Consistent Routines: Predictable routines provide a sense of stability and security.
- Empowerment: We encourage self-efficacy by involving children in their own care planning and decision-making processes
